La Purísima

We arrived in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua this afternoon and were greeted by Megan, the President of Rainbow Network.  We ate a late lunch with Megan, and she shared the story of La Purisma

All over the country devoted catholic families celebrate the Purisima or Gritería as it is known commonly. The Gritería is a religious festivity that takes place on the eve of the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary; where dozens of catholic families install in front of their household altars in honor of the mother of Christ, while others visit to pray and sing traditional songs, receiving in return traditional sweets and goods that is known commonly as “Gorras”.

Visitors liken it to Christmas and Halloween combined. Megan was able to experience La Purísima this year and shared this picture with us. .

We wrapped up our day with nightly devotions preparing for the week ahead

Blessings to all,

Kate Ellis
